British Values

At our school, we are committed to promoting the core British Values defined by the Department for Education: Democracy, The Rule of Law, Individual Liberty, Mutual Respect, and Tolerance of Those of Different Faiths and Beliefs. These values are woven through our curriculum, our ethos, and our daily interactions. They help our pupils grow into respectful, responsible, and active citizens who contribute positively to modern Britain.

Democracy

We ensure that all pupils learn about the importance of having a voice and participating in decision‑making.

  • School Council elections.
  • Class votes on topics, texts, rewards, or learning choices.
  • Opportunities for pupils to share ideas through suggestion boxes or pupil voice surveys.
  • Debates, discussions, and structured reasoning activities within lessons.
  • Assemblies exploring democratic processes, voting, and leadership.
  • Participation in Trust‑wide or local community projects.
  • Roles such as House Captains, Eco‑Reps, Digital Leaders, or Play Leaders chosen by peers.

The Rule of Law

We help pupils understand the purpose of rules and laws, how they protect us, and the responsibilities that come with living under them.

  • Clear school rules and routines reinforced consistently across the school.
  • Class charters created collaboratively at the start of the year.
  • Behaviour policies focused on fairness, restoration, and understanding consequences.
  • Visits or talks from police, PCSOs, fire services, or other public bodies.
  • Learning about national laws through topics (e.g., online safety, road safety, environmental responsibility).
  • Teaching about rights and responsibilities in PSHE and citizenship lessons.
  • Celebrating pupils who demonstrate responsibility and good judgement.

Individual Liberty

We encourage children to make safe, responsible choices and to develop confidence in expressing themselves.

  • Promoting independence and resilience through everyday learning and routines.
  • Teaching pupils how to keep themselves safe (online safety, healthy choices, relationships education).
  • Encouraging pupils to take ownership of their learning (self‑assessment, goal setting).
  • Opportunities to choose clubs, enrichment activities, roles, or responsibilities.
  • Celebrating individuality through creative arts, diversity days, and personal achievements.
  • Supporting pupils to challenge stereotypes and understand personal rights.

Mutual Respect

Respect is at the heart of our school ethos. We teach pupils to appreciate themselves and others, and to value positive relationships.

  • Explicit teaching of respectful language, behaviour, and listening skills.
  • Restorative approaches to resolving conflict.
  • Whole‑school rewards recognising kindness, teamwork, and considerate behaviour.
  • PE and sportsmanship values (fair play, encouragement, collaboration).
  • Mixed‑age activities, playground buddy systems, and peer support initiatives.
  • Celebrating different talents, contributions, and strengths within the school community.

Tolerance of Those of Different Faiths and Beliefs

We prepare pupils to live in a diverse, multicultural society by helping them appreciate and understand different beliefs, cultures, and traditions.

  • RE curriculum exploring major world religions and non‑religious worldviews.
  • Celebrating festivals and cultural events across the year.
  • Visits to places of worship or meeting visitors representing different faiths.
  • Books, stories, and assemblies that reflect global cultures and diverse backgrounds.
  • Anti‑bullying work focused on equality, inclusion, and respect.
  • Discussions about global citizenship, human rights, and community cohesion.
